Why, did Jesus have to die? In Matthew 20:28 and Mark 10:45, Jesus makes it clear. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Jesus gave His life willingly so that we could know the Father and have eternal life.
To live the best life possible, we must live within the will of God. Is it always easy no, it’s not, but it’s worth it. Even Jesus, didn’t always want to do the will of God, but He did. As a matter of fact Jesus asked God to remove the assignment of going to the cross that He was given. He said, Father if you are willing, please take this cup from me, nevertheless not my will but yours be done.
In the Greek ransom is defined as follows:
- the price for redeeming, ransom
- paid for slaves, captives
- for the ransom of life
- to liberate many from misery and the penalty of their sins
The word ransom and redeemed are used interchangeable throughout scripture. Jesus is our redeemer.
The word tells us that the wages for sin is death. So Jesus gave up His life as an expiatory sacrifice under God’s judgement upon sin providing a ransom for all those who call on the name of Jesus. He was a man who knew no sin, but became sin for us. This means we are delivered from our sin, thus delivered from death to life.
On our best day we wouldn’t be able
Our Ransom Is Paid – Let’s Be Imitators Of Him
He died for us so that we could stand righteous before God, because no sin will enter into the Kingdom. Jesus has made a way for us to enter in, therefore we should be imitators of Christ.
1 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. 3 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not be partakers with them.
