The Greatest King Ever

We all know the story of David and Goliath because a little Sheppard boy killed a giant that not one warrior in Israel was willing to fight. King David was the greatest king Israel ever had serve them.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.

Matthew 5:8 NKJV

Let’s talk about King David for a bit. The bible tells us that God called David a man after his own heart. It is our heart God is seeking to change, it is our heart that God sees.

7 “Blessed [is] the man who trusts in the LORD, And whose hope is the LORD. 8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit. 9 “The heart [is] deceitful above all [things], And desperately wicked; Who can know it? 10 I, the LORD, search the heart, [I] test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.

Jeremiah 17:7-10 NKJV

24 “For I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land. 25 “Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

Eze 36:24-26 NKJV

King David certainly was no saint, but still God calls him a man after his own heart and used him mightily. That should speak volumes to humanity. Why? Well here is a list of King David’s failures:

  • He committed adultery.
  • He arraigned for the murder of the man whose wife he committed adultery with.
  • He disobeyed God by taking a consensus of the people.
  • He did not deal decisively with the sins of his children.

So if David sinned, even to the point of having a man killed, how is it said that he was the greatest King of Israel? How does a man with such sin in his life get called a man after God’s own heart? I’ll tell you why. Our God is a merciful God, full of forgiveness, full of grace! David was a man that knew when he messed up and was willing to admit it. Because David knew God, he always confessed his sins and repented with deep sorrow. He did not like disappointing God. David’s belief in the unchangeable nature of God’s faithfulness and forgiveness was, in my humble opinion, his strongest character trait.

King David wrote roughly 50% of the book of Psalms. All the Psalms King David wrote prove his faithfulness and devotion to God. They prove that King David had an unshakeable, undeniable trust in the Lord to defend him, to fight for him, to deliver him from the hands of his enemies. King David’s Psalms demonstrate his faith and belief in God as our all-powerful creator whose most valuable creation is us -his people.

8 Make me hear joy and gladness, [That] the bones You have broken may rejoice. 9 Hide Your face from my sins, And blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Psalm 51:8-10 NKJV

7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

Eph 1:7 NKJV

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:8-9 NKJV
